SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The International Paper Mill is one of the main contributing sources of pollution into the Savannah River. The very river that Savannah residents get their drinking water from.
"There's a decent amount of organic compounds and other materials that escape into the water in the air that are not good for human health," said Tonya Bonitatibus, Savannah River Keeper Executive Director.
The job of riverkeepers is to protect the river system they are focused on and make sure everybody understands the impact they have on the river.
The international paper mill is one of the many companies mentioned in a lawsuit from the city of Savannah for contaminating the Savannah River with PFAS, which are long-lasting chemicals that are linked to harmful health effects.
