POLK COUNTY, Texas — An East Texas firefighter was hit by a vehicle while directing traffic Wednesday for an emergency response.
According to the Goodrich Volunteer Fire Department in Polk County, one of its crew members was directing traffic and wearing a high-visibility vest and operating with emergency lights. The first responder had minor injuries and was able to walk away from the area.
"This incident is a serious reminder of the risks first responders face while serving our community — and how important it is for all drivers to do their part to keep them safe," the Goodrich Volunteer Fire Department said.
The fire department recommended the following to stay safe around an emergency scene:
Slow down
Move
Stay alert
Follow instructions
Respect visibility limits
