Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez said on Thursday that he broke his left pinky on a hit-by-pitch during a rehab at-bat the night before. He said he is hopeful to still be able to return at some point this season.
Alvarez was in the first game of a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse, working his way back from a sprained UCL in his right thumb. He was hit on the opposite hand during the sixth inning and was removed from the game.
The hope is that Alvarez can return to play in 2-3 days, given it is a small fracture to his pinky. He was out playing catch before the series opener against the Marlins at Citi Field on Thursday, but he had a trainer catching the ball for him.
