GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WILX) -The former executive director of an Eaton County-based shelter is facing federal charges for embezzlement.

Tery Lyn Looney, 53, of Dimondale, was indicted by a grand jury for accusations of embezzling $95,000 from SIREN Eaton Shelter, a shelter that receives federal money.

The theft, first reported in 2023, nearly caused the shelter to close.

The shelter helps survivors of domestic abuse and homeless families find shelter. it receives funding from the Justice Department, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and other federal sources.

The indictment says Looney embezzled nearly $100,000 between June 2021 and May 2023 while serving as executive director.
