LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- A grand jury has indicted the former executive director of a Charlotte shelter on a criminal charge of embezzlement, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Teri Lyn Looney, 53, of Dimondale, is accused of embezzling around $95,000 from SIREN Eaton Shelter while she served as the nonprofit's executive director between June 2021 and May 2023.
According to U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Timothy VerHey, Looney was responsible for the bulk of the shelter's operations -- including its budget and cash reserves.
Officials with the nonprofit told 6 News in 2023 that missing funds were discovered in a routine audit that year, revealing someone had taken money from the shelter. As a result, the shelter was forced to launch a GoFundMe to make up f
