During President Donald Trump's first administration, Olivia Troye was a national security specialist for then-Vice President Mike Pence. But she later became a full-fledged Never Trumper, giving presidential nominee Kamala Harris an enthusiastic endorsement when she spoke at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Trump is now seven months into his second presidency, and Troye remains a scathing critic of his performance on national security matters.
In a late August episode Troye hosted on her Substack, the former Pence adviser laid out a variety of ways in which Trump is endangering the United States from a safety standpoint. And she argued that everything from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is suffering under Trump.

Troye told co-hosts Cliff Schecter and David Shuster, "It seems to pivot. It's sort of like: OK, today, let's focus on destroying this…. That's been Trump's MO. It's always been about: either you agree with him completely and everything he's doing, or the highway. And it pivots, whether it's the intel community, whether it's national security, whether it's the health community — which I certainly lived firsthand during the pandemic."
Trump, Troye warned, is attacking expertise in a wide range of federal government agencies —and endangering the safety of Americans in the process.
Troye told Schecter and Shuster, "You're attacking the intel officers, and you attacking the doctors, and you attack the teachers 'cause they're woke. And you're banning books. Where does it end? Everyone's the enemy now."
Troye noted a letter that current and past members of FEMA recently sent to members of Congress warning that Trump is jeopardizing the United States' disaster preparedness.

Troye explained, "They wrote a letter, and they sent that letter to Congress. And they're warning us. And they're saying: Hey, We're being gutted. Resources are being diverted. And we are heading toward a situation where we could potentially have a Katrina-level disaster again. They're trying to say they are very concerned for the safety of the American people and what this will look like if there is a big hurricane or a massive natural disaster that happens — and we will back to where we were back then."
