MADISON, (WKOW) – John Patterson has officially been selected as the permanent police chief of Madison.

The Police and Fire Commission made the announcement Wednesday night, marking a new chapter for the city's law enforcement. Patterson, who served as interim police chief following former Chief Shon Barnes' departure to Seattle, emphasized his mission built on three pillars: people, culture, and service.

"I really feel people need to be invested in, through professional development, through deeper investments in employee wellness and peer support," Patterson said.

School safety is a top priority for Patterson. He has already taken steps to enhance the city's emergency preparedness.
