CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — City leaders in Cranston were shocked to hear the news Wednesday that City Council President Jessica Marino and the council's lawyer, Stephen Angell, were resigning from their positions.

Their decision to step down came amid criticism about a romantic relationship between the two.

"I need to be clear that I have done nothing wrong," Marino, a Democrat, said to the council. "I no longer feel joy that I felt in public service."

During her remarks, Marino thanked all of her colleagues except for Council Minority Leader Richard Campopiano, who was among the more vocal about the relationship creating a conflict of interest.
