Eight inmates on Alabama’s Death Row have filed lawsuits challenging the state’s nitrogen execution method, calling it unconstitutional.

The lawsuits, all filed separately, were each filed in federal court on Aug. 22.

None of the eight men are challenging their convictions in the new lawsuits, but instead how the state deploys its method of executing inmates using nitrogen gas.

Nitrogen executions are carried out by having an inmate, fitted with a mask, breathe in pure nitrogen gas without a source of oxygen, leaving the inmate to lose consciousness and die.

Alabama was the first to try the novel execution method in January 2024. Since the Jan. 25, 2024 execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith , four other men in Alabama have been put to death using gas.
