Indianapolis City-County Council Democrats on Aug. 27 rejected a Republican push to set specific fines for parents and guardians whose children violate the city's new, stricter youth curfew ordinance . But adults who fail to prevent repeat violations could still face fines up to $7,500 under state law.

Council Republicans and one Democrat, northeast side Councilor Daniel Boots, believed that specific fines of $500 for a second offense and $1,500 for each subsequent offense should be added to city ordinance to pressure parents and guardians to follow the law. The first violation would result in a written offense.
