CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- Illinois football opens up its season Friday night against Western Illinois. The team is expecting record crowds this season, and is enhancing its security measures to prepare.

A new metal detector system -- the same one used at Wrigley Field and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway -- means fans can keep certain items in their pockets.

“The fan will have everything on them, their keys, cell phone, whatever they have, they will walk straight through the metal detector, if it goes off, that's when their stuff gets put on over here,” said UIPD special events captain Joe McCullough. “Keys, wallet, they're put right back in what's called a loop back and they'll go through the system one more time.”
