NEW YORK — Triple-A Syracuse manager Dickey Scott was running out of time. It was 3:25 p.m., and Jonah Tong , 22, the Mets ’ No. 3 prospect (Baseball America), had just completed a bullpen session, which was delayed because of rain on Tuesday.
The Mets were getting ready to announce Tong as Friday’s starter against the Miami Marlins , and he had no idea.
Scott needed to deliver the news before Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spoke with reporters at 4 p.m. He approached Tong, who was reviewing a slider he’d thrown to pitching coach A.J. Sager.
