Authorities have charged a Gloucester County man with possession and distribution of child sex abuse material.
Michael S. Schmitt, 44, of Williamstown, was arrested at his home on Wednesday, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation began after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that someone distributed child sex abuse material on a social media platform, authorities said.
Detectives served a search warrant at Schmitt’s residence on July 17 and seized several electronic devices that they believe belong to him, prosecutors said.
A search of those devices revealed the abuse materials and evidence that the devices were used to access a social media account related to the original tip, according to the prosecutor’s office.
