CLEVELAND, Ohio — The third chapter of Carlos Santana’s career with the Guardians is over.

The Guardians, as expected, released the 39-year-old Santana on Thursday after he cleared outright waivers. They will assume the less than $2 million that remains on his one-year deal worth $12 million.

There’s a chance Santana could be signed by a contender for the stretch run.

Utility man Daniel Schneemann, activated from the paternity list, will take Santana’s spot on the 26-man roster.

The move was expected when the Guardians placed Santana on outright waivers on Tuesday.
