BROWNINGTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - A raccoon that tested positive for rabies in Brownington last week was the 17th such test in Orleans County in just three months. Public health officials have warned to make sure pets are vaccinated and, if possible, kept inside.

Rabies cases occur each year in wildlife in Vermont and elsewhere, but this year's outbreak is unusual. Earlier this month the Newport office of the Vermont Department of Health warned of an increase of rabies in the area.

"Do not touch or pick up wild or stray animals – even baby animals – or try to make them into pets. Doing so can put yourself or your family at risk of exposure through a bite or scratch."
