BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, helicopters were a lifeline. They helped rescue survivors, deliver vital supplies, and get a bird’s eye view of the devastation below. 20 years later, they help show what we’ve lost — and what we’ve rebuilt.
On the eve of Katrina’s 20th anniversary, the Mississippi National Guard launched a Black Hawk helicopter for a tour of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
“These Black Hawk helicopters were used during Katrina for search and rescue operations,” explained Maj. Gen. Bobby Ginn, Mississippi Adjutant General. “The bridges were decimated. The roads were blocked. We had to actually cut our way down from Camp Shelby down Highway 49 just to get to the Coast. i can just remember thinking to myself, ‘Goodness, this is going to be a lot of
