LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A mother is trying to turn her pain into a legacy to stop more families from feeling the impact of bullying.
“I didn’t think my 12-year-old would be capable of committing suicide. I would never have dreamed of that, but here I am,” said Audra Upshaw, who lost her son, Silas Pollock, to suicide back in April .
Pollock, a Farnsley Middle School student, committed suicide after his mother said his mental health deteriorated due to bullying.
“The systems that were meant to protect my son and so many other children failed to keep him safe. My son, my little boy, was left to believe that he had no way out,” said Upshaw.
Upshaw tells WAVE the last couple of months have been tough, but she has always known she has wanted to do something to keep Silas’ name alive.
