CHALMETTE, La. —

In St. Bernard Parish, a school leader who helped get students back in the classroom after Hurricane Katrina, is still on the job.

Superintendent Doris Voitier reflects on the bold moves she made for education and the lessons learned 20 years ago. Advertisement

"I had just completed a full year of being the superintendent. My focus was on student achievement and improving student learning," Voitier said of her focus in August 2005.

But that focus quickly turned to survival. She was helping man a shelter at Chalmette High School when there was a break in the levee.
