The New York Mets had every chance to open their series with a win on Thursday night, but sloppy defense told a different story. Costly mistakes in the seventh inning led to three unearned runs, and the Miami Marlins walked away with a 7-4 win at Citi Field.

The night had started with promise. Pete Alonso belted his 30th home run of the season to tie things up in the fifth inning. The Mets looked ready to fight back after early mistakes, but it all came apart in the seventh, and it’s not the first time Carlos Mendoza was upset.

Unfortunately, they made three costly errors, which led to five unearned runs. Mendoza didn’t mince his words after the loss and admitted the team didn’t play a clean game.

“We didn’t execute. We didn’t play a clean game and they made us pay for it,” Mendoza told
