Just in time for Labor Day weekend, a third travel lane has been opened on I-295 northbound between Route 141 and Route 13.

"This is the busiest stretch of roadway with daily recurring congestion in Delaware," said Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) Secretary Shanté Hastings. "We have had multiple projects underway from Wilmington to Newark to make needed repairs and improvements to address safety and capacity issues and are excited to open the new lane for the holiday weekend."

Adding a third lane over the two-and-a-half mile stretch took about a year to complete, and cost over $32 million.

According to DelDOT that segment carries an average of 113-thousand vehicles a day which can escalate on holiday weekends.
