Heading to the beach for Labor Day weekend? Michigan's lakes are starting their long trend toward cooler temperatures, but remain warm enough for an enjoyable swim, according to a group that tracks water temperatures.
Water temperatures in the Great Lakes peak in the late summer and early fall, according to GLISA , a collaborative between Michigan State University, University of Michigan and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .
Lake Erie is the warmest of the Great Lakes with temperature in the 70s. Lake Superior temperatures range in the 50s and 60s.
Michigan's inland lakes were even warmer in most cases. Lake Leelanau in northern Michigan reached 71 degrees on Aug. 29. Houghton Lake in mid Michigan was 71 degrees.
