TEMPE, Ariz. — A suspect was arrested by Tempe police earlier this week for allegedly supplying fentanyl to a man who died from a drug overdose earlier this year.

Freddie Avila was taken into custody on Aug. 27 after investigators reviewed text messages connecting him to a 47-year-old man who died from an overdose on March 15.

The man was found unresponsive in a parked car at a Tempe car wash. The medical examiner later ruled he died from fentanyl poisoning.

Police said messages had been exchanged between the man and Avila to set up a drug transaction at Tempe Marketplace the night before the 47-year-old was found by police.

Avila allegedly admitted to supplying drugs to the man and reportedly observed him reacting negatively to the drugs before leaving the scene.
