LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Twenty years ago, Hurricane Katrina crashed into the Gulf Coast.
A dam system failure caused New Orleans and surrounding areas to get inundated with floodwater that took weeks to drain.
Before the storm, there was a mandatory evacuation, and many people scattered to other states, including Kentucky.
Louisville Gardens temporarily became a transition center for displaced families.
In our archive video from 2005, which you can watch in the video player at the top , we hear from some of the evacuees who made it to Louisville and the FEMA volunteers who helped.
