A strong month for the stock market ended on a sour note. The S & P 500 on Friday retreated just over 0.6% from Thursday's record high close. That decline sent the index slightly into the red for the week and ended its four-week winning streak. For the month of August, however, the S & P 500 advanced more than 2%, extending its monthly gains to four straight. It's hard to blame anyone for wanting to take some profits ahead of the long Labor Day weekend, especially after the market got through the biggest earnings report of the quarter unscathed. We're talking about Nvidia , of course, which reported strong results and rosy guidance Wednesday evening.
