A United Airlines passenger claims he is the victim of a $17,000 travel scam — that began with an airline employee.
Dan Smoker was attempting to rebook a flight after his travel group’s original flight to Europe was cancelled due to mechanical issues, and he called United Airlines’ official customer service number.
Smoker told ABC News the phone call lasted more than three hours, starting with a United agent who eventually put him on hold before he was connected to someone who identified himself as “David” — the eventual scammer.
The Denver resident told the outlet that after explaining his situation to David, he asked to be rebooked on a Lufthansa (a United codeshare partner) flight from Denver to Munich, Germany.
