CLEVELAND — The Guardians entered the weekend needing to make up plenty of ground in the American League Wild Card race and facing a key matchup against the Seattle Mariners , who currently hold that final spot.

Cleveland (66-66) began Aug. 29 a full 5 games out of the playoff picture, trailing the Mariners (72-62), Kansas City Royals (3 games back of Seattle) and Texas Rangers (4.5 games back).

That makes the weekend series at Progressive Field crucial in the Guardians ' bid to erase that deficit. A poor showing could just about end their playoff hopes.
