INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Supreme Court denied a man on death row the opportunity to file another petition to halt his execution and instead scheduled a date for the government to carry out his death sentence for the 2001 rape and murder of a teenage girl in southern Indiana.

Roy Lee Ward, 53, is ordered to be put to death Oct. 10 at the Indiana State Prison, according to a Supreme Court order filed Thursday. The execution is to be completed before sunrise in the prison's execution chamber, per Indiana law.
