Three African lions will be moved from an island resort off the coast of Honduras to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs as part of a "landmark international rescue" said Cheryl King, a spokesperson for the sanctuary.
Turpentine Creek partnered on the rescue with Carolina Tiger Rescue of Pittsboro, N.C., and Little French Key Resort in Honduras. The North Carolina refuge is taking five tigers from the resort.
"The joint effort represents a powerful commitment to global animal welfare, with each sanctuary leading a coordinated transport and care plan," according to a news release from Turpentine Creek.
Both refuges have launched fundraising campaigns to help cover the costs of the operation.
