NEWPORT, Wash. — A 61-year-old man was found dead inside his cell at the Pend Oreille County Jail on Thursday morning.

According to the Newport Police Department, the man was found not breathing and unresponsive around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday.

Jail staff and medical personnel tried to save his life, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the deceased has not been released.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office will work to determine the cause of death.

The death remains under investigation.
