Woke scolds and anti-woke dolts alike objected to the image of Carpenter kneeling in front of a man who appears to be using her hair as a leash. When asked by Gayle King what her initial reaction to the controversy was, Carpenter said “Y’all need to get out more.” She said she was “shocked” the cover was such a big deal. “Between my friends and my family and the people I always share my music and art with first, it just wasn’t a conversation,” she said. “It’s perfect for what the album is.”
