Today, they are young adults, and they're opening up about what it means to grow up with Katrina as symbols of their unique legacy.

Jack West was only 10 days old when the storm made landfall. Like many other families, they evacuated. Mother Lauren West says it was hard with two babies. Jack was an infant, and his sister Megan was only 17 months old.

"It was terrifying, really, because we didn't know, really, where we were going or for how long we would be going," Lauren said.

With fear and uncertainty, they just kept driving east.
