BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Crews working on the U.S. 280 widening project will pause for Labor Day weekend, but lane closures will resume Tuesday night, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

The closures will run Tuesday through Thursday, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., impacting both eastbound and westbound right-hand lanes between Lakeshore Parkway and I-459.

ALDOT engineers say the project aims to reduce congestion along one of the busiest stretches of U.S. 280.

“This segment has the highest traffic counts on U.S. 280,” said ALDOT engineer Todd Connell. “So it’ll help alleviate that congestion.”

Crews are currently widening the outside lanes. Once that phase is complete, traffic will shift outward to allow construction to begin in the median.
