The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution to seek state funding for a new gun safety campaign.
On Thursday, commissioners authorized the Berrien County Health Department to apply for up to $360,000 through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Firearm Safety Program.
If awarded, the grant would support a public awareness campaign promoting the secure storage of firearms. The plans include the distribution of gun locks and educational materials, as well as launching multimedia ads on TV, radio, social media, and even gas station screens.
The health department says it will partner with local police, schools, and community groups to get the message out.
A media consultant would also be hired to coordinate the countywide campaign.
