LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Friday marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.

Extreme Weather Specialist John Gordon remembers that day all too well; he flew into the eye of the hurricane with hurricane hunters during Katrina.

He said they collect weather data for the National Hurricane Center to improve the forecast by 30%.

When asked how it felt flying into the hurricane, he responded with, "in the eye of serene?"

"It's one of the most beautiful things on the face of the earth," he told WHAS11 News. "But then you got to go back through the eye wall, which is very angry. So you have anger and calmness all together. It's like a collision of forces, so to speak."

Gordon said it costs a million dollars to evacuate one mile of United States coastline.
