DICKINSON — Two New England high school students avoided jail time earlier this week after agreeing to a plea deal in a case where they were accused of setting a classmate on fire.

Daniel Dewall and Jaren John Rafferty allegedly lit a classmate on fire on Dec. 31, 2024. Dewall and Rafferty were arrested and charged on Feb. 6 after Hettinger County sheriff’s deputies obtained video footage of the incident.

Dewall and Rafferty were initially charged with two felony counts of endangering by fire or explosion, a Class B felony, and aggravated assault, a Class C felony.

As part of the plea agreement, Southwest Judicial District Judge Dann Greenwood dismissed the endangering by fire charges and reduced the aggravated assault charges to misdemeanor assault.
