Malik Tillman did not wait long to make an impact on his Bayer Leverkusen debut.
Tillman found the net in the 35th minute against Werder Bremen on Saturday as Leverkusen drew 3-3 at the Weserstadion.
Patrik Schick scored just five minutes in to give the visitors the lead. Leverkusen doubled its advantage 30 minutes later through club-record signing Tillman.
Christian Kofane sent in a cross that took a deflection and found Tillman near the penalty spot. From there, the U.S. men's national team attacker showed some real composure in taking two touches off his chest before volleying a shot in off the post.
Tillman was replaced by Claudio Echeverri in the 61st minute.
Bremen got back into the match when Romano Schmid scored from the spot just before halftime, but Schick grabbed a second goal when he scored a penalty of his own in the 64th minute.
Down to 10 men after Niklas Stark's red card, Bremen still found a way to earn a draw. Isaac Schmidt took advantage of a mistake from Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flekken to make it 3-2 in the 76th minute, and Abdoul Coulibaly scored a 94th-minute equalizer.
Tillman's debut for Leverkusen was delayed as he battled a muscle injury in preseason.
The midfielder didn't feature in the preseason and also missed the club's first two games of the regular season, before manager Erik ten Hag put him straight into the lineup for Saturday's game.
Tillman joined the Bundesliga side last month in a reported €35 million transfer from PSV, making him Leverkusen's club-record signing.
As he looks to regain full fitness, Tillman was left off the USMNT roster for September friendlies against South Korea and Japan.
