“Mistakes were made.”

Remember when Bill Clinton was president and he got caught lying under oath in a civil deposition about Monica Lewinsky?

It was obstruction of justice. A crime, a felony. Except that as a Democrat, Clinton got to brush off his crime as a “mistake,” and use the passive voice — “were made.” So instead of “crimes were committed,” it was “mistakes were made.”

That was in 1998. In retrospect, it was the beginning of a whole cottage industry of excuse-making by Democrats for their appallingly bad, often illegal behavior.

The Democrats now are all Alibi Ikes, to use the old Ring Lardner expression.

Let’s start with mortgage fraud. The Democrats went after Donald Trump with lawfare — charging him with all sorts of nonsensical non-offenses, both criminal and civil.
