CHARLESTON, S.C. — North Dakota State was stifling on defense, while senior quarterback Cole Payton was stellar in his first career collegiate start.

The Bison limited The Citadel to 122 yards, cruising to a 38-0 victory on Saturday in noncoference Division FCS action before 1,0691 fans at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

“It just looked like they were playing together," Bison head coach Tim Polasek said of the defense. "I really looked like we were fundamentally sound.”

A fifth-year senior, Payton completed 10 of 16 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown, also rushing for 101 yards on 11 attempts. The Bison finished with 520 yards on 68 plays.
