The Tulane football team cruised to a 23-3 victory over Northwestern in the season opener for both teams in New Orleans on Saturday.

Here are the three main takeaways from the Green Wave's dominant win.

WHAT WE LEARNED

Tulane’s defense is as good as advertised and Northwestern’s offense is as bad as last year. The Green Wave set the tone with a sack that caused a fumble the Wildcats recovered on the first snap and an interception on the next snap. That was the first of four pickoffs, including two by nickelback Javion White, as Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone showed exactly why SMU benched him after three games last season. The Wave will be tested a heck of a lot more when Duke and Darian Mensah come to town in two weeks, but it was a promising start.
