Jalen Woods’ first quarterback start of the season was short-lived. The redshirt sophomore for Southern was carted after sustaining a hard hit to the front of his helmet with 12:46 left in the second quarter.
Woods ran a quarterback keeper play for eight yards up the middle and while he was sliding Mississippi Valley State defender tackled him hard on the front of his helmet.
No flag was thrown and the 6-foot-1, 200-pound quarterback stayed on the ground for several minutes until the nearby ambulance truck drove on to the field. As he was lifted in a stretcher and brought inside the truck, Woods gave a thumbs-up to fans.
Woods ended the game completing 9 of 13 passes for 70 yards.
Cam’Ron McCoy, who started at quarterback last week for Southern, replaced Woods.
