TALLAHASSEE - For the first time since 2001, Alabama has dropped a season opener.

No. 8 Alabama was stunned by unranked Florida State on Saturday, 31-17.

Making his first collegiate start, quarterback Ty Simpson gave the Tide the first lead of the game with a touchdown pass to tight end Josh Cuevas, but was outduled by Florida State's Thomas Castellanos.

The Boston College transfer, who had been outspoken about Alabama during the offseason, backed up his words on the field.

Germie Bernard was Alabama's offensive star, with eight catches for 146 yards.

Alabama plays ULM next Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
