TRAVERSE CITY — Drinking alcohol on Traverse City’s streets, public sidewalks and city parking lots and parking ramps could soon be banned.

City commissioners on Tuesday will consider adding an ordinance against public consumption of alcohol. Police Chief Matt Richmond initially proposed such a rule to address safety concerns raised when city leaders were weighing whether to permit overnight homeless shelter Safe Harbor to stay open all year.
