M el “Rubel” Gallegos paused near the altar at San Isidro Catholic Church and proudly relayed how his great-grandfather deeded the land so the historic adobe church and adjoining cemetery could be built in 1835.
Back then, members of the Agua Fría community were traveling by buggy or on foot into Santa Fe for Masses, weddings and funerals, yearning for something closer to home. The story goes that Don Jose Jacinto Gallegos tossed his sombrero into the air and told a crowd that wherever the hat landed would be the location of the San Isidro church’s altar.
And so it was.
San Isidro Catholic Parish is celebrating 50 years as a parish this year, an occasion to look back on the successes of a place of worship that has long buoyed the community and served the families of the trad
