Historically Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and the start of serious political campaigning. There’s been next to no activity for the Toledo city races this November but the 2026 campaign for U.S. Senate in Ohio is fully engaged.

The Labor Day parade of unions in downtown Toledo on Monday is a perfect setting for “the dignity of work” candidate, former three-term Sen. Sherrod Brown.

The all but certain Democratic challenger to appointed Republican Sen. Jon Husted needs a makeover to avoid the appearance of a retread, and we’re not just talking about shedding the shaggy and rumpled profile of this 72-year-old who first appeared on the ballot more than a half century ago.

Mr. Brown has a history of support for issues important to labor and has credibility as a sincere advocat
