TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) -- The Victory Bell rang out, but there was nary a smile to be seen.

Arizona State, the defending Big 12 Conference champions and the 11th ranked team in the nation, had just won their season opener, beating a quality NAU program 38-19. Yet the vibe was anything but cheerful, as the Sun Devils had just slogged through a sloppy night defined as much by their mistakes as the victory.

“We gotta hone in on it all,” said ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham of his team’s miscues.

ASU quarterback Sam Leavitt threw two touchdowns to wide receiver Jordyn Tyson and ran for two more to help offset a night that saw the Sun Devils commit 12 penalties, including some that negated potentially game-changing plays.
