The Oklahoma State Board of Education has called a special meeting for Wednesday morning at the state Capitol after last week’s meeting was canceled by State Superintendent Ryan Walters.

Board members plan to vote on whether to hire their own attorney, a move allowed under state law. The statute permits the board to retain legal counsel because their interests may not always align with those of the state superintendent.

Attorney Bob Burke, representing four members who support the vote, said the board needs independent legal guidance on its duties and procedures.
