Scam text messages have reached staggering levels, with attackers flooding phones around the world.

Many of these scams, which originated in China and are powered by kits rented or sold to cybercriminals, pose as missed package alerts, unpaid tolls, or even traffic fines.

Behind these disguises, though, their goal is to steal passwords and money, five of the most common outlined below, according to the Federal Trade Commission:

Package delivery scams – Fake texts claiming delivery issues (often posing as USPS) send victims to phony sites to pay “redelivery fees” and steal personal/financial info.

Fake job offers – “Task scams” promise easy work but eventually demand money to withdraw fake earnings, leaving victims with losses.

Phony fraud alerts – Messages posing as banks or Ama
