Expectant mothers have been issued an urgent vaccination alert following the death of a baby from whooping cough.

The heartbreaking fatality recorded by the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) occurred between January and June this year, marking the first deadly infection from the serious childhood illness documented in 2025. This represents the 33rd death since the crucial whooping cough vaccine was introduced, and the 27th involving a child whose mother had not been vaccinated.

Healthcare professionals have stressed the critical importance of pregnant women receiving the life-saving immunisation, as the government highlights growing concerns about declining vaccination rates.
