The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 26-year-old man following a near-fatal shooting in Plaquemine.

Sheriff Brett Stassi says gunfire erupted on Barrow Street, which intersects LA 1, around 6 p.m. Friday. The victim was reportedly walking down the street when the assailant pulled up in a car and shot the victim multiple times before driving off.

The victim was airlifted to a Baton Rouge hospital in critical condition Friday night, but by Sunday his condition had improved to stable, Stassi said.

Authorities were able to get a description of the vehicle from the victim and witnesses, and used license place reader cameras to locate the car later Friday evening in West Baton Rouge Parish.

The driver, Donald Ray Vondo, was booked in Iberville Parish Jail on counts of attempt
