This Day in History - August 31: Gov. Thayer dedicated Sugar Palace in Grand Island.

August 31, 1890 - The Grand Island Sugar Palace was dedicated by Nebraska Gov. John M. Thayer on Aug. 31, 1890.

The palace was built to commemorate the birth of the state’s sugar beet industry and housed a display devoted to the production and processing of sugar beets.

There was a factory to process the plant in Grand Island.
